The term “Ponni” in Tamil means “gold,” and the rice is named after the river due to its golden hue and rich taste.  This rice variety was initially cultivated in the Kaveri river delta, which includes the Tamil Nadu districts of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is credited with the invention of Ponni Rice. The university crossed two existing rice varieties in the 1980s to create a new hybrid variety. How to Cook Ponni Rice?

  1. Boiling Method
  • Rinse the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 15-30 minutes
  • Boil a pot of water, preferred ratio is 2 parts water to 1 part rice
  • Once the water is boiled add the drained rice and reduce the heat to low, and cover the pot
  • Simmer it for about 15-20 minutes, or till the water is absorbed and the rice is tender
  1. Ponni Raw Rice can Also be Cooked through Pressure Cooker Method
  • Rinse and soak the rice for at least 15-20 minutes
  • Add the soaked rice and water to the pressure cooker. A ratio of 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water is preferred
  • Close the lid and cook on high heat until the first whistle blows. Turn off the heat and wait for the pressure to release naturally for 15-20 minutes.
  1. This aromatic rice variety can also be cooked using the microwave method
  • Rinse and soak the rice for at least 45 minutes
  • Place the drained rice in a microwave-safe bowl and add enough water to be no more than three-quarters of the way up the bowl.
  • Microwave on high, uncovered, for 18 minutes.
  • Let it rest for 5 minutes, then microwave again on high, covered, for another 4 minutes.
  • Allow a final standing time of 6 minutes before serving. 

Cooking Brown Ponni Boiled Rice

  • Rinse brown ponni boiled rice thoroughly to remove any debris or excess starch
  • It is mandatory to soak the brown rice given its bran layer. Soak the rice for at least 30 minutes for an hour to reduce cooking time and improve texture
  • Use a 2.5:1 ratio of water to rice. In a pot, bring the water to a boil, add the soaked and drained rice, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 30-40 minutes or until the rice is tender and water is absorbed
  • Allow the rice to rest for 5-10 minutes off the heat, then fluff with a fork before serving the delicious aromatic rice variety.
